About
Owen Flannery
Owen was born in San Francisco, California and started playing soccer when he was 8 years old as a forward for a local club. At the age of 14, Owen was selected to play for the Olympic Development Program (ODP) State team and later was recruited by NCAA Div I programs. Owen selected San Jose State University and in his senior year the team was ranked #1 in the country, with an undefeated record in the regular season. The Spartans appeared in 2 NCAA Tournaments during Owen’s time there.
Owen’s favorite memory is scoring a goal against Texas Christian University (TCU). Scoring in Spartan stadium was a dream come true for Owen. “I’ll never forget the celebration with my teammates when I scored that goal against TCU. We were all so happy. Dancing and cheering on that famous field.”
Owen has had lots of successes as a club soccer coach, winning the California State Cup more than 10 times. His club teams have also won 2 National Championships and numerous big tournaments around the USA. Owen has worked with the Strikers for over 15 years and loves the community, coaches and most importantly the players. Owen has earned the highest diplomas and licenses the country has to offer. He has his master’s degree in Sports Psychology, BS in Kinesiology, USSF A License, NSCAA Premier Diploma and Director of Coaching Diploma.
Owen’s favorite players are Marcos “El Diablo” Etcheverry and Mia Hamm. Owen got to play with Etcheverry when he played and lived in Bolivia, South America. Etcheverry remains the best player Owen ever played with. His first touch was perfect, he was tough on 50/50 balls and had the best free-kick Owen has ever seen. Etcheverry led Bolivia to the World Cup the only time the country has ever been. Mia Hamm is another player Owen really respects. She is one of the best goal scorers Owen has ever seen. “The way she positioned herself off the ball before it got to her was legendary. I feel like she scored in every game I ever watched her play.”
Owen lives in Redwood City with his wife Jen, son Finn, daughter Layla, and dog Coco.
